We left our home in Winnipeg on October 22 just before the weather started to get cold and snowy. We made it to Kansas and enjoyed very warm weather until a cold front was coming in. We had wanted to stay one more day in the camp as they had a great hiking trail along an old railway bed, but the weather told us to get moving.
The great biking trail just at the back of the campground in Kansas
more trails and very good birding as the migrants we just coming from the north
At New Caney, Texas this campgound also had great backwoods but we were warned about the wild pigs in the area, but we did not see any sight of them although we were keeping our eyes out for them.
At San Leon we had these visitors on the central pond of the camp
We spent one enjoyable month in the small town of Palacios, Texas
The town rebuilt the sea wall and wharfs along the 2 km bay frontage
A flock of Long-billed Curlews were frequent visitors on the lawns around town
Since Chris' birthday is in November we have many pictures taken in this location in the camper
This small ship is a 50% exact replica of La Salle's boat that was ship wrecked in the Bay. It was called "La Petite Belle" This shipyard is a dry dock for repairs to yachts and any size ship. Across from this inlet they were building large shrimp boats and had a dock for the shrimpers to bring in their daily haul. Just beyond that yard was a company building flat bottom barges. This is quite an industrial town.
A large Christmas celebration was enjoyed on the front lawn of the historical Luther Hotel (built in 1902) Over the years many celebrities have stayed here.
We have 2 more stops to make - one in Bay City and then on to New Caney where we will put our camper in storage for 3 months while to travel to Boquete, Panama.
